Mobile data, SIMs, and Wi-Fi in Manila guide article
Get connected
Get connected before you start moving
The easiest Manila arrival is one where at least one phone works before you leave the airport area. If your phone supports eSIM, that may be the quickest path. If you prefer help at a counter, a physical SIM can also work well.
Either way, keep airport Wi-Fi and offline screenshots as your backup so you can message, show your pickup details, and find your hotel address even before full data is working.
Decision rules
Pick the connection path that fits your phone
Choose the connection setup based on your device, trip length, and comfort level.
- If your phone supports eSIM and you are comfortable setting it up, use eSIM for the fastest land-and-go option.
- If you want a local number or counter help, choose a physical SIM and be ready for registration steps such as passport and selfie checks.
- If you are staying only briefly, roaming may be acceptable, but check the cost before relying on it for the whole trip.
- If you are traveling as a group, set up one leader phone first, then solve the rest after everyone is settled.
Connection choice
eSIM vs physical SIM
Both can work. The better choice is the one you can set up calmly and test before you depend on it.
Choose eSIM if
- Your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
- You want data ready with minimal counter time.
- You are comfortable scanning a QR code and managing phone settings.
Choose physical SIM if
- You prefer help at a telco kiosk.
- You want a local number for calls or local contact.
- You are staying long enough for a local setup to feel worthwhile.
Arrival checklist
Arrival connection checklist
Do the basics before you are standing outside with luggage and no working data.
- ✓Confirm your phone is unlocked. Do this before flying if you plan to use a local SIM or eSIM.
- ✓Save pickup and hotel details offline. Screenshot your address, map pin, driver notes, and contact numbers.
- ✓Use airport Wi-Fi as your first backup. Message your driver when ready and confirm the pickup bay.
- ✓Choose one data path. Do not keep switching between roaming, Wi-Fi, eSIM, and physical SIM while tired.
- ✓Test the important apps. Open Maps, Grab, WhatsApp or Telegram, and your hotel/pickup message before leaving the airport area.
