What to pack for Manila and nearby trips

A practical packing list for heat, rain, walking days, work trips, and nearby day trips from Manila.

What to pack for Manila guide article

Packing logic

Pack light for heat, rain, and movement

Manila packing is mostly about climate and movement. You may be outside in humid heat, inside cold malls or vans, and waiting in airport or hotel lobbies on the same day.

Bring clothes that breathe, shoes you can actually walk in, a small rain layer, and a few essentials that keep you comfortable without making the bag heavy.

Local rule of thumb: pack for humidity first. Add one small layer for rain or aircon, then stop. A lighter bag is usually more useful than a perfect outfit for every possible plan.

Decision rules

Adjust the bag to the trip you are actually taking

Use these simple if/then rules instead of packing for every possible version of Manila.

  1. If you are mostly in the city, keep the bag light: breathable clothes, one aircon layer, walking shoes, and phone power.
  2. If you are doing nearby day trips, add sun and rain protection: cap, sunscreen, umbrella, and shoes that can handle mixed surfaces.
  3. If you are coming for work, pack one smart-casual set and comfortable commuting shoes. Manila days often involve more walking and waiting than expected.
  4. If you are traveling with kids or older parents, bring a small comfort kit: snacks, wipes, water, and medicines you already know work.

Power and plugs

Bring a universal adapter and check voltage if needed

The Philippines commonly uses around 220V power. Plug types you will often see include A, B, and C. For most travelers, a universal adapter is the simplest answer.

Quick check: most modern phone and laptop chargers handle 100V to 240V, but check the small print on your charger if you are unsure. If a device is 110V only, do not plug it in without the right converter.

Packing checklist

Clothes and essentials kit

Once the charging items are sorted, keep the rest of the bag simple. Focus on what you will actually wear and the small items that make long travel days easier.

  • Light, breathable basics. Cotton, linen blends, and quick-dry shirts are easier than heavy fabrics.
  • One cool-mall layer. A light jacket, cardigan, or overshirt helps in cold malls, offices, vans, and flights.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. You may walk more than expected through malls, long corridors, terminals, and uneven sidewalks.
  • Small umbrella or light rain jacket. Rain can arrive quickly, even when the day starts clear.
  • Basic medicines you already trust. Bring your usual pain relief, antihistamine, stomach medicine, and any personal prescriptions.
  • Hydration and outdoor basics. A reusable bottle, small electrolyte packs, sunscreen, and insect repellent are useful for hot days and out-of-town plans.
